DescriptionBlue-Grey Quartz RingI made this ring from shining, sterling silver and set it with a delicate and unusual smoky grey-blue quartz reclaimed from an antique ring. Domed like an old-fashioned jelly mould, the cut is somewhere between a rose-cut and a cabochon. It is hand engraved by me with close attention to detail using long practised and carefully honed skills. I designed the swirling patterns on both sides of the ring to catch the light. I listen to music and draw what I see in my synaesthesia; the engraved design is based on these drawings. The blue-grey of the quartz mirrors the depths of the silver colours I see as I listen to electric guitar.One edge of the ring shank is burnished the other retains the satisfying crackled texture from the making process. This is a unique ring, and I never make the same thing twice. You will have a ring like no other. It is destined to be a jewel box favourite.Inspired by Music and SynaesthesiaI am synaesthetic, which is a neurological trait where my senses cross. Therefore I have a strong visual impression of shape, colour, movement and sometimes texture when I hear music. The Blue-Grey Quartz Ring is inspired by what I see when I listen to the song Falling Away With You by Muse. The electric guitar is silver, greys and whites and lightning-like shapes. The pale blue-grey quartz mirrors one of the colours that I see when I hear electric guitar playing. However, the stone’s smooth shape reflects the more rounded shapes I see in the bass. The sterling silver I used to make this Blue-Grey Quartz Ring comes from old and broken silverware and cutlery. Consequently, I can eliminate the need for newly mined silver in my work. I melted a piece of old silverware down. Then I hand forged the resulting ingot of molten silver into this Blue-Grey Quartz Ring. This ring has a full UK Hallmark which guarantees it is sterling silver.
